Revive Mohyal Spirit

Comparing the old times with the present time, most of our brothers and sisters in general and elders in particular are quite right in complaining, the absence of the old "Mohyali Spirit" or ethos among most of us which used to be our hallmark, in not a too distant past. We will have to revive this spirit through sustained and consistent efforts in our own interest. There is no alternative to it.

We Mohyals are capable of doing wonders and are proud of our heritage and past. But with the passage of time, the old spirit stands diluted and if further time is allowed to slip away, it would totally trade away. depriving us of our existing old links who are eye-witness of our glorious past. It is, therefore, better to come to grips with the problems facing our community sooner than later.

Reverting to the main topic there might have been few dowry related deaths but large number of post marital. problems do exist in our community. Let this topic be our main agenda for discussion through articles in "Mohyal Mitter". "Mohyal Milan" and "Spat Bandhu" in addition to our "Sabha monthly meetings and its progress, reported alongwith the minutes, for publication in "Mohyal Mitter" with the idea of creating more consciousness and consensus in our community with the ultimate objective of revival of "Mohyali Spirit" which would solve all our problems and weaknesses which have crept in during the last few decades.

As mentioned above, greater responsibility develops upon the Presidents, Secretaries and each member of our Sabhas, the prominent writers, spread throughout India and abroad, and above all on our Apex Body under the command of its dynamic, progressive and visionary President, Raizada B.D. Bali, to undertake this stupendous task of consolidating, the fading "Mohyali Spirit" among us : Will it not be our greater achievement, in addition to others, already made during the last 15 years or so'?

Hoping, that while taking note of my observations, We Would, also, keep in mind, the following couplet of Dr. lqbal:

Khuda ne aaj tak us qaum ki halat nahin badli
Na ho jis ko khayal aap apni halat ke badalne ka.

Social Evil

On one side of scale of our society is a woman and on the other, heavy articles, of dowry which out-weigh and out-shine her personality. This social evil in its present form is spreading unabated like a deadly epidemic with no sign on its control in sight. so far. Parents' attitude of discrimination between a male and a female child and financial disparity to a great extent, are responsible for this sad state of affair.
I would like to add in this connection that there is no escape for anybody from this malady. It may not affect us directly, but there is every likelihood of its indirectly affecting us through the offsprings of our sons, daughters and cousins etc.
We will have to change our entire outlook and perception about the sanctity of marriage and its values which means that the choice of a life-partner is, definitely more important than the material gain attached to it. It, of course does not mean the abolition of marriage gifts. It only means that a life partner is more important irrespective of the gifts, she brings along with her. A marriage not only unites a young man and a woman into a wedlock but also it brings together two families to share their `dukh-sukh' (pains and pleasure). In short a marriage is to be broad-based.
THERE is no denying the established fact that giving dowry or marriage gifts to every girl, crossing the threshold of her parents at the time of her marriage, is a tradition prevalent since time immemorial. They are most happy to share with her whatever they could according to their capacity. But in the present day world the dowry has assumed such dangerous portents that a woman in general is being identified with the material commodities, she brings alongwith her. Its origin in one form or the other, dates back to the days of the institution ofarranged marriages in our society.

Morally Bankrupt

The increasing demand for dowry has so much downgraded the prestige of an average woman that all the progress and development made by us appear to he meaningless, as on one hand we are making great strides and on the other, getting morally bankrupt.

The woman who is also a mother is passing through great crisis. Marriages are the base of our social and family set-up but bargaining mentality is spoiling the sanctity of this institution. Whatever the causes of the failure of its sanctity, is a separate issue.

What we are more concerned at present, is the alarming number of the dowry related deaths and excesses and torture being perpetrated on the married women. According to a report for the year 1995. a dowry death takes place in India after every one hour and forty two minutes, a woman becomes a victim of torture of her in-laws after every 31 minutes and modesty of a girl/woman is outraged after every seven minutes.

In 1991. dowry related deaths and victims of excesses of the so-called in-laws, had torched 5157 and 15949 respectively. There had been some decrease in the dowry related deaths in 1995. But torture and excesses at the hands of the in-laws is on increase day by day which has touched 28579 cases.

In 1995, 1850 married women had lost their lives in the Uttar Pradesh,47) in Maharastra, 417 in Madhya Pradesh, 362 in Andhra Pradesh 369 in Rajasthan, 218 in Haryana and 60 in Delhi, in the dowry related incidents. There might have been some exaggeration in these figures, but at the same time, some case might have gone unreported, two, reports of suicide by marriageable girls also appear in Press from time to time. In the second week of October, 1998, three unmarried sisters aged 18. 20 and 22, committed suicide in Baini Ganj (Uttar Pradesh) due to weak financial position of their family.
